Hyperbaric oxygen therapy support in the fight against depression
Depression is a condition characterised primarily by lowered mood, reduced energy and activity and interests. It is the most common mental disorder.
Epidemiological studies conducted worldwide show that approx. 17% of the general population suffer from depression during their lifetime. Among primary care patients, 12-25% struggle with depression, half of whom meet criteria for moderate or severe depression. Furthermore, half of those suffering from depression have never been diagnosed with it. Those affected often face disregard for their symptoms by loved ones and suspicion of faking it.
Depending on the causes, a distinction is made between endogenous depression, respiratory depression, reactive depression, dysthymia and perinatal depression, among others.
Adequate oxygenation of the tissues during oxygen therapy results in reducing anxiety and improving mood. This therapy is particularly recommended for endogenous and respiratory depression, where it acts causally to regulate cell function by ensuring adequate tissue nutrition.
For respiratory depression, oxygen therapy is a life-saving treatment!
