How the hyperbaric chamber works

What is oxygen therapy?

A hyperbaric chamber (HbOT) is a device that, thanks to the increased pressure inside (1.3 ATA), provides the body with concentrated oxygen with an oxygen concentration of 92-96%.
Such conditions favour the delivery of oxygen to hard-to-reach areas, crossing barriers not normally reached, resulting in faster recovery and improved health.

FAQ

Key questions and answers about oxygen therapy.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a tested and completely safe method of assisting treatment. It also causes no discomfort during its course due to its relatively low and completely non-invasive pressure (1.3 ATA).

The therapy is carried out under the supervision of a hyperbaric chamber operator. All risks will be discussed before the treatment starts.

Are there contraindications to the use of oxygen therapy?

Yes, there are contraindications that disqualify the possibility of starting oxygen therapy. They can be divided into 2 groups: contraindications that absolutely rule out the procedure and relative contraindications - in their case, approval for the therapy can be given by the doctor after a specialist consultation.

Absolute contraindications:

  • undrained pneumothorax,
  • bleomycin treatment (both current and past).

Relative contraindications:

  • upper respiratory tract infections,
  • Doxorubicin treatment (up to 24 h after the last dose),
  • seizures (also episodic),
  • treatment with disulfiram (used to treat alcoholism),
  • Cis-platin treatment
  • high temperature (fever),
  • history of pneumothorax,
  • thoracic and respiratory surgery
  • optic neuritis - even if it was a long time ago
  • malignant tumours
  • pregnancy
  • pacemaker - except for models with a certificate confirming safe operation of the pacemaker under increased pressure
  • lung diseases with CO2 retention (emphysema, COPD)

If you are in doubt as to whether any of these conditions are a contraindication to hyperbaric chamber therapy, please discuss the matter with your doctor. It is worth remembering that although hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy is a non-invasive treatment, it may have minor side effects in the form of fatigue and headaches. Particularly after the first and second sessions.

What is the admission procedure for an oxygen therapy session?

The first step is to complete a questionnaire. Based on this, we will interview you about your current state of health and any ailments. This is an essential procedure for your safety - it will help detect potential contraindications to the procedure.

How do you prepare for a session?

Pre-session:

  • Do not consume alcohol up to 12 hours before the treatment and do not smoke cigarettes up to 2 hours before the treatment. Smoking cessation is recommended to maximise the effects of the treatment.
  • Avoid perfumes, make-up, hairspray and any ointments or creams.
  • If you have dressings on your body on the day of the procedure, these must not contain fat-based preparations (ointments, creams).
  • Before your session in the chamber, you must use the toilet, as you cannot leave the chamber during the treatment, plus the therapy has a diuretic effect.
  • In relation to the earlier point, you should also not consume fizzy drinks just before the session.
  • If you have an upper respiratory tract infection, this information should be reported to staff.
  • Dress comfortably, comfortably. You can take an item into the chamber with you to pass the time - it could be a book, your favourite podcast, etc. :)
How is the session going?

The session consists of several stages:

  • compression - increasing the pressure in the chamber to a certain value
  • patient breathes pure oxygen through a mask
  • periodic interruptions in breathing oxygen
  • decompression - gradual depressurisation
How does hyperbaric therapy feel?
During therapy, you may feel a fullness in your ears similar to the pressure changes during an aeroplane flight. most patients find the sessions relaxing.
How many sessions will I need and how often?
The number and frequency of sessions depends on the specific condition. Some require five visits, others may need daily sessions for 20-30 days.
How quickly can you see the effects of the chamber?
This is very individual - it is usually possible to tell after just 3-4 sessions whether oxygen therapy is working as the client expects. Sometimes the effects can be felt after only 2-3 sessions.
